| Think of the Ford Freestyle as a wagon version of the new Five Hundred. The interior is large and comfortable and, depending on its layout, can seat six or seven passengers. As in competitive vehicles, the third row seats are best reserved for children.
The car cruises quietly. The ride is nicely controlled and handling on the track proved to be quite good. As with the Five Hundred, the 3.0-liter engine drones away on acceleration. All-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission are options. Otherwise, front-wheel drive and a siWith many competitors deciding that midsize pickup trucks are the wave of the future, the Ranger--a true compact pickup--may begin to feel lonely. Buyers, at least, still have this option of buying a small, but useful, truck. Ford offers regular or extended cab (SuperCab) models. A crew cab is also available, but it is sold as the Explorer Sport Trac. Four-cylinder power is confined to the regular cab, two-wheel drive Ranger. Buyers opting for a V-6 can choose between 3.0- or 4.0-liter engines and also have the ability to specify four-wheel drive. As would be expected, the larger the engine, the better the acceleration, especially with a load in the cargo box. The ride is busy on just about any surface and the Ranger can do some front-to-rear pitching when the road is rough. However, this truck rides acceptably in daily use. Handling is reasonably good, too, with nice steering feel. Conclusion: A good choice among the shrinking compact pickup truck field.x-speed automatic are standard. Conclusion: Practical and family friendly, the Freestyle should provide a viable passenger-car based alternative to many truck-like SUVs. |
