Unusual in the subcompact field, the Ford Focus offers buyers a choice of four body styles: a sedan, hatchback and wagon--all with four doors, or a two-door hatchback coupe. The Focus also offers buyers a much better than average performance. Ride and handling are good enough to suggest that the Focus belongs in the compact or midsize field. Front seat room is generous and, thanks to a high roof, the seats are nearly chair high, which further enhances comfort. In the back, chair high seating and a tall roof mean good head room, but leg and knee room are in short supply with the front seats moved back. The trunk is large for the field, but the trunk opening is small. Four-cylinder engines provide adequate, but not overwhelming power. Refinement when the engines are pressed is also in short supply, although not so bad as to be more than a minor irritant on full-throttle acceleration. Conclusion: This is one of the better subcompacts. Not considering it carefully would be a mistake. |
