The remake for the 2002 model year is still impressive, three years after the fact. Independent rear suspension and a wider track improved both ride and handling. The Explorer is still a truck, but it no longer hammers that point home to the driver with every bump and at every turn.

Inside, the independent rear suspension allowed Ford to lower the cargo floor. This improves utility and created enough space for an almost-adult-sized third row seat. Passenger room in the front and second row seats is good, but not overwhelming.

The V-6 struggles and lacks refinement on acceleration. The V-8 does much better at little cost in EPA mileage ratings.

Conclusion: There is a reason that the Explorer remains the nation's most popular SUV. Its overall combination of ride, handling, utility and price make it a formidable competitor.
