For people who need a large SUV, the Ford Expedition has much to recommend it. Room abounds in the first and second row seats. Even the third row, which offers optional power operation, can hold adults. Cargo room is fair with all three rows in use, but the interior is cavernous when the second and third row seats are folded. Ride comfort is surprisingly good, thanks to the independent rear suspension. The Excursion does not feel like a truck over bumps or washboard surfaces. Handling is also surprisingly precise. Steering feedback is good and the Excursion tracks nicely in a straight line. In town, a turning circle that is under 40 feet aids maneuverability, but this is still a big vehicle. Acceleration with the base 4.6-liter V-8 is sluggish. The 5.4-liter V-8 does better. Fuel economy is poor, regardless of the engine chosen. Conclusion: A solid performance from the Excursion makes it a must to consider by anyone shopping for a full-size SUV. |
