| Despite its very good handling and, for the subcompact field, roomy interior, the Neon falls short of what most people want in an entry level vehicle. The engine intrudes whenever the driver accelerates, the ride is jarring and interior treatments have clearly been chosen with a strict budget in mind. The front seats, however, are roomy and reasonably supportive. The back seat is limited to people under six feet tall. The trunk is, again for the class, reasonably roomy. Drivers opting for the manual transmission will find the shift linkage rubbery. The four-speed automatic blunts acceleration, but the base Neon still turns in an adequate performance. The image leader, the 230-horsepower SRT-4, is a car for performance buffs on a liberal, if not overwhelming, budget. It is very fast and handles well. The R/T is a reasonable compromise for those buyers interested in performance, but who find themselves on a tighter budget. Conclusion: It's spunky with a personality all its own. Still, for most buyers, one of the more refined subcompacts would be a better choice. |
