Dodge has neatly shoehorned the Durango between mid-size SUVs and the full-size competition. It has also noticeably improved just about all aspects of performance in this latest generation Durango, introduced in 2004.
Interior capacity is impressive. Front seat passengers enjoy plenty of room. Second row adults also fare well, though knee room can be tight for the tallest with the front seats moved back. Adults even fit in the third row, but the lack of supportive seat cushioning and the challenge of entry limit the usefulness of this seat for grownups. The V-6 is adequate only for light duty use over relatively flat terrain. The 4.7-liter V-8 does better and is probably the best choice for most buyers. The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is quite powerful--and thirsty. The ride is civilized and the handling is predictable and surefooted. Conclusion: Straddling size categories does not always work, but it is successful here. The Durango gives buyers who find midsize SUVs too small and full-size models too large a useful alternative. Towing capacity is also impressive when the vehicle is properly equipped. |
