| Dodge carved out a comfortable niche in the pickup truck field with the last Dakota. Larger than the compact trucks, but smaller than the full-size monsters, the Dakota was the only mid-size game in town. With the sale of smaller trucks sliding, many of these compact vehicles have been redesigned and made larger. In response, Dodge has increased the size of its newly redesigned Dakota in an attempt to once again squeeze between the new midsize and traditional large pickups. The problem is, the new Dakota is now nearly full size, except for width. Unfortunately, ride qualities and some payload and towing abilities fall short of expectations associated with its new size. The cabin is comfortable enough for two adults, but width does not seem sufficient for three full-size passengers. Empty, the ride is not as settled as in some full-size models. Engines perform nicely and the automatic transmissions shift well. Styling, long a Dodge truck strength, turns heads. Conclusion: In trying to straddle the mid-size and full-size pickup truck worlds, the Dakota ends up with many of the maneuverability problems of the full-size trucks, but is missing several of their benefits. |
