| The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a pleasant surprise. Originally sold almost exclusively on its appearance, buyers quickly discovered that there was a car of substance under the retro styling. Now a convertible has joined the lineup, though most sales will be of the original small wagon body style. There, buyers will find good accommodations for adults in the front and the rear. Chair-high seating aids comfort. Cargo space is limited with the back seats up, but they can be folded, or even removed, to create an impressive amount of open space. Accommodations in the back seat of the convertible are for two passengers only, but the backseat room in this model is also better than average, when compared to other convertibles. On the road, the base four is a little weak but acceptable. Performance improves with the manual transmission. The turbocharged engines provide more power, of course. Handling is quite good. The PT Cruiser is stable and predictable in corners. Braking is also good. Conclusion: Wagon or convertible, long after the allure of the styling has faded the appeal of the car should remain, thanks to its competence in daily driving. |
