| Buick's first minivan, the Terraza, shares its structure with the Saturn Relay, Pontiac Montana and Chevrolet Uplander. These new models are supposed to diminish the fear of being seen in a minivan by offering unique frontal styling meant to suggest that these are really sport utility vehicles. You can judge how successful this effort has been. On the road, these minivans perform nicely. The 200-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic transmission, the only drivetrain available, provide adequate power around town. Acceleration for passing or merging is somewhat sluggish, however. All-wheel drive is an option. Interior space is good, although room in the second and third rows is not overly generous when adults are the passengers. Still, this would be a better long-distance or carpool vehicle for adults than most mid-size sedans. Note that many of the clever second and third row seat folding capabilities seen in other minivans are absent in these models. Handling is unexceptional. These minivans go where they are pointed with reasonable precision. Stopping distances are average. Conclusion: Despite being an upgrade from the previous GM minivans and assuming that a promised improvement in the offset barrier crash test will be confirmed, these vans still trail the competition. They are a stopgap measure until an entirely new design arrives in a few years. | |
