| The Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a relatively large coupe based on the Impala. As such, it offers generous room when compared to competitive coupes. Adults actually fit in the front and rear, although entry to the back seat is easy only for the limber. The trunk is large. The passenger doors are long and heavy, making tight parking spots a chore. Performance depends on the model chosen. Base versions with the 3.4-liter V-6 are adequate, while the 3.8-liter V-6 does a better job. Most impressive of the lot is the supercharged 3.8-liter V-6 found in the SS. Ride and handling in the base vehicle feel a little too soft and lose for really sharp control. In the 3.8-liter models, the suspension is firmer, with beneficial results for both riding comfort and handling precision. The SS is better yet, however, even this model understeers too soon and too much when cornered with enthusiasm. Conclusion: This is one of the few coupes suitable for adult passengers in all seats. However, it is far from sporty. |
