| Introduced last year using the same platform that serves as the basis for the Saab 9-3, the Malibu is an impressive sedan. The Maxx version is a hatchback, featuring a roomier rear seat and the option of a rear DVD entertainment system. While the styling of both models may be awkward, there are few shortcomings in the way these cars drive. The major weakness deals with engine refinement. Acceleration from the four-cylinder engine, which is noisy when pressed, is unimpressive, even though the four-speed automatic transmission shifts eagerly and smoothly. Good enough around town, the four falls short of what most motorists will want on the highway. The 3.5-liter V-6 provides more impressive acceleration, though it falls short of the refinement, power and smoothness found in motors from rivals. Still, a V-6 Malibu is lively and responsive. Ride and handling are very good, thanks in part to the rigid body structure. The Malibu is nimble in town and balanced during high speed cornering. Interior comfort is good in front, average in the rear of the sedan. The hatchback Maxx, however, delivers more rear seat room and comfort, rivaling some full-sized sedans. Conclusion: Engines aside, the Malibu offers a compelling combination of room, riding comfort and handling prowess. It merits careful consideration. |
