The front-wheel drive Impala is Chevrolet's largest sedan. As such, it offers reasonable room in the front and rear, although seat cushions that are too soft compromise comfort on longer trips. The trunk is also roomy.

Performance depends on the model chosen. Base versions with the 3.4-liter V-6 are adequate, while the 3.8-liter V-6 does a better job. Most impressive of the lot is the supercharged 3.8-liter V-6 found in the Impala SS. Ride and handling in the base vehicle feel a little too soft and loose for really sharp control. In the 3.8-liter models, the suspension is firmer, with beneficial results for both riding comfort and handling precision. The Impala SS is actually the best of the lot, though not even its suspension is so firm as to make the vehicle uncomfortable over rough pavement.

Conclusion: The Impala has long been eclipsed by other vehicles for refinement, comfort, safety features and performance. Still, considering its size and price, it remains an attractive option for many buyers.
