| Built in South Korea by the remnants of a restructured Daewoo, the Aveo is the low price, sub-compact entry from Chevrolet. Buyers can choose a four-door sedan or four-door hatchback. Chevrolet claims five-passenger seating, but width dictates two adults for the back seat where they will find a surprising amount of head room. Leg room will be a little short, but the back seat is high enough to eliminate the legs-up seating position found in other subcompacts. Trunk room is average in the sedan; skimpy in the hatchback behind the raised rear seat. The only engine is a 103-horsepower four that is reasonably smooth. A five-speed manual transmission, with a rubbery linkage, gets the most from this motor. A four-speed automatic is optional. Regardless of the transmission, the Aveo works hard to get up to highway speeds. Passing is best left for long, open stretches or roadway. Handling is mediocre. The Aveo plows toward the outside early in turns. While the vehicle is highly maneuverable, it has no sporting intentions. The ride is busy over most surfaces but it does not punish occupants. Conclusion: Remembering the starting price, the Aveo should serve reasonably well around town. However, higher trim levels with such features as air conditioning raise the price closer to that of some more competent subcompacts. |
