| More for show and cruising than actual work, the Chevrolet SSR turns heads with its retro styling. It is also the only convertible truck with a retractable hardtop. While its head-turning abilities are beyond doubt, its value as transportation is questionable. The body structure flexes more than most other convertibles, the top could do more to seal out noise when raised and the base drivetrain with its 5.3-liter V-8 and four-speed automatic transmission, while powerful enough for rational driving, still leaves some people wanting more acceleration. To answer that need, Chevrolet has added a 6.0-liter V-8 with a six-speed manual transmission for 2005. Forget about using the SSR for rugged work. The cargo box features a tonneau cover that limits the height of objects that can be carried, and the load bed is so nicely finished that few owners would consider hauling anything that might damage the compartment. Ride and handling are generally second rate, and the constant drone of the engine on the highway becomes tiresome quickly. Conclusion: Perfect for attending cruise night. |
