| Based on the Chevrolet Suburban, the Cadillac Escalade ESV is powered by the 6.0-liter V-8. Acceleration is average at best. Remember that these are big vehicles. The four-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Fuel consumption is high. Room abounds, with ample space for passengers in the front, second and third row seats. Width accommodates three adults. Cargo space behind the raised third row seat is impressive. Ride and handling are truck-like. Some expansion joints taken at highway speeds can produce abrupt ride motions, but generally, these vehicles tend to float over larger bumps. Handling is sluggish and vague. There is little joy to be found in tackling a back road. Braking with four-wheel discs is markedly better than in the previous generation vehicles, but stopping distances are still long. The Escalade EXT is a sport utility truck version of the ESV and can be expected to have similar performance. Conclusion: As with the Escalade, prestige does not translate into state-of-the-art performance. |
