Top Pick After a string of frustrations, the CTS has succeeded in carrying the Cadillac banner into the near-luxury field. For 2005, in an effort to make the vehicle accessible to customers with a smaller budget, Cadillac has added a new entry-level model, equipped with a 2.8-liter V-6 that is based on the 3.6-liter V-6 held over from last year. Both V-6s are available with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

Also returning is the CTS-V, with its 5.7-liter Corvette V-8 and six-speed manual transmission. It is an outrageously powerful and fully competent sports sedan that combines domestic V-8 hustle with world-class handling. While the temperament of the car is entirely different from its European and Japanese competition-it is brasher than any of these vehicles-its capabilities are impressive.

The new base V-6 engine delivers only 10 fewer horsepower than last year's 3.2-liter engine, so performance is expected to be similar. The new motor should be more refined, however.

Acceleration is ample with the 3.6-liter engine. Handling is very good with the base suspension, sharper yet with the sport suspension. Braking also gets high marks.

The body structure feels exceptionally solid over all surfaces.

Front seat comfort is good. Rear seat passengers will probably want more leg and head room. The cargo area is large for the size of the car.

Conclusion: Regardless of the engine, this Cadillac has the ride and handling to tempt buyers who are hooked on foreign sports sedans. It deserves careful consideration.
