| Based on the mid-sized GM sport utility vehicle platform, the Rainier distinguishes itself from its brethren by offering V-8 power, in addition to the standard six-cylinder engine, in the short-wheelbase five-passenger body. Similar models include the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Isuzi Ascender. A Saab 9-7 joins this group later. The rear air suspension, which is standard on the Rainier and optional on some of the other GM vehicles that use this platform, provides a better ride than the standard steel springs. Other than that, handling mimics the other vehicles using this platform. It is somewhat clumsy, with spongy responses to changes in the too-light steering. Grip in corners is mediocre. The Rainier offers all-wheel drive, with no low range gearing, rather than four-wheel drive, suggesting that it should not be considered for serious off-road treks. Six cylinder versions are powerful enough, though this engine fails to meet the standards for refinement set by some competitors on full-throttle acceleration. The V-8 version feels stronger and smoother. Interior room is quite good, even with the short wheelbase, which precludes a third row seat. Conclusion: While we really do not need a fourth version of this vehicle--and a fifth is on the way, the Buick is unique in offering V-8 power with the short wheelbase. It falls short of the handling and performance available in some of the crossover SUVs based on passenger car platforms, however. |
