Slowing sales in only its second year of production suggest that buyers may already be having second thoughts about the unique styling approaches of the BMW Z4 two-seat sports car. Random creases that highlight the body panels are the issue.

Not in dispute is the driving pleasure afforded with either engine. The Z4 is quick (though not the fastest in its price range with the 2.5-liter six or the most capable with the 3.0-liter motor), agile, responsive and predictable. Track trials reveal that the Z4 is a nicely balanced package.

Transmission choices include a five- or six-speed manual, a five-speed automatic, or BMW's sequential shift manual that can function as an automatic. This transmission can be abrupt at times, suggesting that buyers are better served with either the automatic or the manual transmission.

Conclusion: Nicely balanced and reasonably rewarding to drive, it still has a problem. The BMW 3-Series coupe and convertible are at least as much fun and more practical.
