| TThe BMW X3 is a light-duty sport utility vehicle. It offers the height and road clearance of a true SUV, but BMW recommends that no really rugged off-road treks be attempted with an X3. The 3.0-liter six provides ample acceleration. The 2.5-liter engine is expected to feel noticeably less responsive. Ride and handling are first rate, although buyers considering the sports package are warned to try the vehicle on a rough road before signing up for that option. The ride with this suspension package on all but the smoothest pavement can be downright harsh. Interior room is good in front, fair in the rear. While taller back seat passengers will find ample head room, knee room is in short supply with the front seats all the way back. Cargo room is good. The rear liftgate does not have a separately opening glass window to ease the storage of smaller items. Conclusion: Options can quickly raise the price of an X3 to levels that make other vehicles more attractive. Still, the X3 offers very good handling and, for those who pass on the sport package, the vehicle rides reasonably well. There?s a lot of ?sport? here. Others offer more ?utility.? | |
