| Thanks to its polarizing styling, BMW?s flagship sedan has seen no shortage of controversy. Appearances aside, the BMW 7-Series is a formidable vehicle, offering an intoxicating blend of luxury and performance. Two wheelbases are available to V-8 buyers, with the 745Li offering additional rear seat room and comfort not found in the shorter 745i. Buyers of the V-12 powered 760Li have no choice. The longer wheelbase is standard. Performance is exceptionally good. The ride is firm for good control and stable cruising, though some other premium luxury cars offer more isolation from bumps. Passenger room is very good with rear seat passengers enjoying first-class accommodations. If there is a flaw in the car, it is that drivers will need retraining. From starting and stopping the engine to operating iDrive, which is meant to simplify life by allowing the driver to access hundreds of secondary control functions with a single knob, nothing works as expected. Quality lapses have also been an issue with the complex electronics occasionally letting owners down. Conclusion: A technical marvel that has to be addressed on its own terms, the BMW 7-Series will not be every luxury buyer?s cup of tea. It refuses to bend to the driver. Rather, drivers must change to accommodate the car. Those who do will discover an exceptional combination of ride, handling and luxury. | |
