| The 6-Series is back. This time the lineup includes a convertible as well as a coupe. Based on the 5-Series, the 645Ci uses the 4.4-liter V-8 that is optional in the 5-Series sedan and standard in the 745i. Transmission options include a six-speed automatic, six-speed manual and sequential shifting manual that functions as an automatic transmission until the driver intercedes. Seating is for four, with the back seat offering supportive seating surfaces but little room. For its small interior volume, the exterior dimensions are much too large. On the road, the ride is quite firm. No bump goes unnoticed and some pavement breaks can produce abrupt ride motions. Handling is very good, although the weight of the vehicle is felt during enthusiastic cornering. The brakes are very good. Still, these new vehicles cannot match the previous 6-Series, which made every trip a joy. The convertible uses a traditional fabric top, which when raised, reduces rear visibility significantly. The small rear window is glass and independent of the roof. It can be raised to serve as a wind buffer when the top is down. Conclusion: The 6-Series, for all its proficiency, fails to deliver the kind of driving pleasure that buyers spending this kind of money should demand. |
