| The redesign of the 5-Series in 2004 was a mixed blessing. Retained from the previous 5-Series sedans were the exceptional blend of handling and ride comfort, the inviting interior and the feedback through the primary controls that makes the driver feel that the car is an extension of his or her mind and body. By some measurements, handling actually improved, while the optional Sport Package, which includes active steering and active roll stabilization, enhances maneuverability at lower speeds and corning responses at higher speeds. Front seat comfort is very good. Only the tallest occupants will want more head room in the back. They will also want more leg room if the front seats are pushed all the way to the rear. Reducing the appeal of the new design are higher prices and the arrival of a simplified version of the BMW's i-Drive. This needlessly fussy approach to controlling HVAC functions, the audio system and navigation is clumsy and distracting. Performance enthusiasts with an ample bank account can look forward to the return of the M5, while more practical customers will be treated to a new wagon in 2005. Conclusion: The sport-luxury field is highly competitive. While others may provide better performance in some categories, the complete 5-Series package is still highly desirable. |
