| First the bad news: When Audi redesigned the A6, it did not give the allroad, which was based on the previous A6 platform, an update. It soldiers on using those older underpinnings. The good news: The previous generation A6 platform was very good and has aged well. Designed to give a hint that it is a sport utility vehicle, without actually being one, the allroad performs well. The base model features a 2.7-liter turbocharged V-6 with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Performance is more than adequate, with 60 miles per hour arriving in about eight seconds. The V-8, which comes only with the automatic transmission, is noticeably quicker and offers better throttle response. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard. The ride is quite good. The suspension offers a high level of control and reasonable compliance. Handling is also good?it is much better than in most sport utility vehicles?but the allroad does not quite equal the new A6. The interior is up to Audi?s high standards. The allroad is roomy and comfortable front and rear. Cargo room is also very good. Conclusion: Older can still be attractive. The future of the allroad, however, with a new Audi sport utility vehicle in the wings, is not certain. | |
