| Available as either a four-place hatchback coupe or two-seat convertible, the TT is a stylish sports car. Four-cylinder models come in two versions, both turbocharged. The base, 180-horsepower vehicle is quick enough for a weekend excursion, features front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful four-cylinder 225-horsepower engine comes only with quattro all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. This engine features ample power, but is marred by noticeable turbo lag that can be troublesome at times. An even more responsive V-6 version features all-wheel drive and Audi's new Direct Shift Gearbox. This clutchless manual transmission can be sequentially shifted by the driver, or allowed to do its work automatically. Quattro versions take the prize for handling, although the base front-wheel drive coupe and convertible are also rewarding on secondary roads. Both the coupe and convertible bodies feel impressively solid. Room in front is fairly good and comfort is acceptable. Rear room and comfort are severely limited. The coupe is really a two-seater. Conclusion: Alas, there is no perfect TT. The base model could use all-wheel drive, but it is not available. The 225-horsepower vehicles suffer from turbo lag while the V-6 powered TTs, with their self-shifting manual transmission, turn out to be less satisfying than they would be with a straight manual gearbox. |
