| Sales numbers often do not tell the whole story. Despite its relatively small volume, the Audi A8 L is one of the world's most impressive luxury cars. Aluminum construction keeps weight down. Quattro all-wheel drive puts all the power--and there is plenty of it from either the V8 or W12 engine--to the road. A six-speed automatic transmission shifts with near perfection. The suspension delivers a solid, well controlled and--for the luxury field--surprisingly firm ride. The interior is lovely. Room is exceptional, with rear seat passengers getting first-class treatment. The interior remains hushed even at very high speeds. The engines are smooth and refined. On hard acceleration they are suitably muffled and perform effortlessly. Unfortunately, the Audi MMI control system is needlessly complex and distracting. In addition, resale value has been disappointing when compared to its German rivals. Conclusion: Unique in the field with its standard all-wheel drive, styling and aluminum construction, the Audi A8 L delivers a top-flight premium luxury car performance. Initial feedback suggests that the vehicle may be troublesome, however. In that, it is not alone in this field. The BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class have also been beset with glitches unbecoming to cars with such lofty prices. |
