Audi has redesigned its A6 sedan without skipping a beat. The new car carries on in the tradition of the previous A6 by offering impressive ride, handling and passenger comfort. All A6s initially feature quattro all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. The base 3.2-liter, 255-horsepower V-6 turns in lively acceleration. A 4.2-liter, 335-horsepower V-8 is optional. So far, we?ve only driven the V-6, which makes it to 60 miles per hour in 7.4 seconds. The refinement of the engine, even when it is pressed, is impressive. The automatic transmission generally shifts smoothly. However, for people who want to accelerate after almost stopping, the transmission has a hard time deciding between first or second gear. Downshifts for midrange passing were sometimes sluggish. Front seat comfort is excellent. In the rear, taller adults may wish for more headroom, though legroom is good. Cargo capacity is also good. Ride and handling are about as good as we have seen in this category. While the ride may be considered firm by some passengers, it is well controlled and free of harshness, even on rough surfaces. Handling is very good with little lean and good grip in corners. The steering is precise, with good feedback. Controls are generally straight forward, with the exception of the MMI knobs and buttons that needlessly complicate audio and climate control operation. It is better than BMW?s iDrive, but that is damning with faint praise. Conclusion: Audi?s new A6 is luxurious, comfortable and sporty. Interior treatments are excellent. The design is first rate while the materials and assembly are excellent. Now, if only they would do something about that needlessly complex and distracting MMI control system.
