| With its wide range of drivetrains and body styles, the A4 is hard to categorize. Base four-cylinder models with the quattro all-wheel drive and automatic transmission deliver adequate, but far from spirited, acceleration. Four-cylinder front-wheel drive models with either the CVT (continuously variable automatic transmission) or the manual feel livelier. A4s with the 3.0-liter V-6 are competitive with near-luxury cars, thanks to this engine's effortless performance, while the V-8 powered S4s have to be counted among the best--and fastest--sports sedans in the world. Regardless of the engine, buyers are treated to a first-class, if snug, interior. Design and materials are exceptionally good. Front seat room is good. Space for adults in the rear seat is cramped, however, and the Cabriolet (convertible) features a rear seat that is suitable only for children, pets and parcels. Trunk room is good, though the trunk lid opening is small. All A4s four and V-6 A4s ride comfortably, if firmly. S4s are decidedly sportier with a firm suspension that can produce abrupt ride motions on many surfaces. Conclusion: The Audi A4 is a small jewel of a sedan, wagon or convertible. It is exceptionally solid, features rewarding handling and offers some of the best interior design in the auto industry. Just be sure you can live with the small back seat. |
