| Competing in the so-called near-luxury field, the Acura TL delivers more than most buyers might expect for the money. Equipment levels are generous. Buyers need only select the transmission type (five-speed automatic or six-speed manual), and whether they also want performance tires--with the manual transmission only--and a navigation system. Acceleration is potent, especially once the engine, which features variable valve timing, gets past 4,000 rpm. Ride qualities are very good, but firmer than some near-luxury buyers might want.Handling is a mixed bag. Most of the time, the TL is excellent. However, driven enthusiastically at the limit, the TL's responses suggest that 270 horsepower may be just a little more than the front-wheel drive chassis can handle. Some rear-wheel drive competitors do better. Stability enhancement is standard.Front seat comfort is very good. The rear seats are much less attractive for adults. The cushioning fails to provide proper support and legroom is tight with the front seats moved back. Conclusion: A first class effort. Only aggressive drivers will be likely to discover that the car stresses the limits of its front-wheel drive layout. Buyers needing to carry taller passengers in the rear should look elsewhere. |
