Meant to replace both the Century and the Regal, the LaCrosse bursts on the scene delivering a bit less than promised, at least in its base and mid-level versions. Interior treatments are a clear improvement over the Regal and Century, and vehicle handling dynamics are, in the top trim level, much improved.

However, buyers who opt for the base CX or mid-level CXL models will find ride and handling only little changed from previous entry-level Buicks. Driving enthusiasts should only consider the CXS model, which with its sport suspension and engine borrowed from the Cadillac CTS, is a much better performer.

The base CX and mid-level CXL models are equipped with GM's proven and capable 3.8-liter V-6. It clearly falls short in refinement when compared to other V-6s available, but it does promise good longevity and fuel efficiency.

CXS buyers end up with a more modern 3.6-liter V-6 that delivers 240 horsepower, 40 more than the base engine. The only transmission with either engine is a four-speed automatic.

Regardless of the model chosen, Buick has squeezed out an extra inch or so for rear seat passengers. Leg room with the front seats pushed back is still tight for taller riders in the back, however. Front seat room and comfort should be more than adequate for all but NBA stars. One welcomed carryover from previous Buicks: all versions are quiet on the highway.

Conclusion: Better than ever, but still trailing some other family sedans, the LaCrosse in base and mid-level versions will please the Buick faithful. The CXS, meanwhile, should impress driving enthusiasts.
